Understanding Pediatric Feeding Disorder: A Case-Based Approach

Abstract Join Feeding Matters for the workshop “Understanding Pediatric feeding disorder: A Case-based approach” presented by authors of the field-leading consensus paper published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. Featuring case studies on pediatric dysphagia, ARFID, and “picky eating”; this hour-long workshop also includes a pre-recorded Q&A with Dr. Amy Delaney, Dr. Praveen Goday, and Dr. Colleen Taylor Lukens. Representing medical, nutrition, feeding skill, and psychosocial domains, these distinguished thought leaders will address how the proposed diagnostic criteria should: ·      Enable practitioners and researchers to better characterize the needs of heterogeneous patient populations. ·      Facilitate inclusion of all relevant disciplines in treatment planning. ·      Promote the use of common, precise terminology necessary to advance clinical practice, research, and health care policy.

Speaker Credentials Praveen Goday, MD is a professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is a pediatric gastroenterologist who serves as the director of clinical nutrition and director of the Feeding, Swallowing, and Nutrition Program at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Dr. Goday is an authority in Pediatric Nutrition who has served in leadership roles with American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Colleen Lukens, PhD is a psychologist in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the psychosocial program manager for the Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Lukens completed her graduate work at The Ohio State University, where her research program focused on the assessment and treatment of feeding problems in children with autism. She received further training in pediatric psychology as a resident and fellow at Nemours/A. I. duPont Hospital for Children, with specialty training to work with children with chronic GI conditions. She has worked with children with pediatric feeding problems for over 20 years, with particular research and clinical interest in novel intervention modalities and the evaluation of treatment outcomes. Mary Beth Feuling, MS, RD, CSP, CD Working with pediatric patients in the areas of food allergy, gastroenterology, and feeding disorders, Feuling has a vast range of experience – from providing product and process development services as a food scientist for Fortune 500 food manufacturing companies to the development of the Food Allergy Nutrition Clinic and the interdisciplinary Eosinophilic Esophagitis Clinic at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Specializing in pediatric nutrition, food allergies, and feeding disorders, Feuling authored the Food Allergy Chapter for the first ASPEN pediatrics core curriculum. Amy Delaney, PHD, CCC-SLP is an Assistant Professor at Marquette University and Director of the Neurodevelopmental Feeding and Swallowing Lab. She previously worked as a speech-language pathologist at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin with expertise in collaborative assessment and treatment approaches of children with motor-speech, feeding and swallowing disorders. Dr. Delaney earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 2010. Her studies centered on motor-speech development and oral-motor assessment with a minor focused in kinesiology and motor learning theory. Her dissertation and subsequent research have focused on the measurement of oral-motor feeding skill development in young children. Dr. Delaney has been awarded the NIH LRP through the Child Health and Human Development Institute supporting new and promising investigators and several grants.
