Each year more and more babies, not just preemies, are being born with and surviving conditions that were once fatal. Because inpatient care is so expensive, families are finding themselves sent home with one or more machines along with other medical equipment. Parents are required to learn many new skills prior to discharge so that they can provide necessary treatments at home. This article discusses these issues and describes how parents are being prepared for the transition prior to discharging from the hospital.
