Feeding is Complex

“Feeding is complex.”
It’s a phrase we say often. It helps us explain the intricate system involved in feeding development—starting in infancy and continuing through childhood. It also describes the challenges when this process is disrupted, affecting any of the four domains (medical, feeding skill, psychosocial, or nutrition) and resulting in pediatric feeding disorder (PFD).
It’s even more complex when we acknowledge the overlap with another condition: avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). ARFID is a mental health diagnosis that shares significant diagnostic criteria with PFD and is more widely recognized. Sometimes, children with PFD are misdiagnosed as having ARFID, and in other cases, PFD can evolve into ARFID over time.
With all of this complexity, we continue to face one of our greatest challenges: public perception. Too many people still believe that feeding is automatic, that picky eating is the result of parenting decisions or “in their head”, or that a child’s place on a growth chart means everything is fine. These misconceptions leave thousands – if not millions – of children undiagnosed, overlooked, and struggling.
At Feeding Matters, we’ve long been committed to system change—not just for families and individuals today but for future generations. Yet, we know that without awareness, our progress is limited. That’s why I’m so thankful to share the launch of a significant new initiative: the It’s Not Picky Eating campaign.
This multi-year effort raises awareness of PFD and ARFID, supports early identification, and marks the beginning of our collaboration with Instagram influencer @myARFIDlife and their new nonprofit, ARFIDAwareness. Together, we’re also excited to re-introduce the One Bite Challenge, a fun and impactful way to engage the community and build awareness. Inspired by personal journeys of trying new foods, the One Bite Challenge encourages participants to step out of their comfort zones, try one bite of a new or challenging food, or participate in a way that feels comfortable for them. It’s more than a challenge—it’s a movement to foster understanding and spark conversations about PFD, ARFID, and the unique struggles families face.
Through this campaign, we’ll amplify family stories, share tools and resources, and build bridges of understanding between these two interconnected conditions. Our message is simple:
When eating is hard, scary, or hurts… It’s Not Picky Eating.
This Thanksgiving, as we reflect on the power of community and the importance of coming together, I want to thank you. Your support is helping us break down barriers and create a world where every child gets the help they need.
As we approach the end of the year, I invite you to join us in this vital work—whether by participating in the One Bite Challenge, sharing our campaign, or making a gift to support our mission. Together, we can ensure no child faces these challenges alone.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Jaclyn Pederson, MHI
