ADVANCED INFANT/PEDIATRIC DYSPHAGIA: Problem-Solving Complex Patients and Practice issues
Presented by Pediatric Resources Inc.
Date
September 18, 2022 - September 19, 2022
Description
Two days of learning along with a master clinician. This timely interactive seminar will bring you essential information to enhance your effectiveness as a specialist in pediatric swallowing and feeding and a sought-after member of your team. Correlating clinical data, co-morbidities (airway/GI/nutrition/neurologic/oral motor/sensory), and the infant/child’s behaviors is at the heart of completing a good differential. Apply critical problem-solving skills to complex diagnoses and their interaction, for NICU infants through school-aged children. Explore hot topics in dysphagia (e.g., thickening, NMES, swallow studies, tongue tie) practice issues, therapist-physician relationships. Discuss your challenging patients. Perfect for both the novice to take it all in, and for the experienced clinician searching for an advanced level of problem-solving for complex cases and professional issues. Learning Outcomes:
- Apply system-based differential diagnosis specific to clinical presentation of feeding/swallowing problems
- Apply critical reflective thinking to complex feeding/swallowing issues
- Explore strategies to address a wide range of feeding/swallowing problems
- Explain key concepts/challenges/evidence specific to at least three “hot topics” in pediatric dysphagia
- Navigate therapist-physician/team interactions
- Complex interaction of respiratory, GI, airway, sensory and postural co-morbidities
- Case discussions and problem-solving
- Current challenges in service delivery across EI, hospital, school, and community settings
- Broad range of interventions and individualizing plans of care specific to clinical presentation

Description
Live Webinar for Therapists. Complete both sessions for 13 Contact Hours (1.3 CEUs) September 30 to October 1, 2022 9:10 am EST • 8:10 am CST • 7:10 am MST• 6:10 am PST (US) ERI is partnering with Children’s Health to offer this webinar. This 2-day webinar has been designed for professionals who have a foundation of knowledge in the components of typical and atypical oral motor, oral sensory, feeding/swallowing, respiratory, and general movement development and their interrelationship. Primary emphasis will be placed on the development of appropriate intervention programming for infants and children with neuromuscular involvement who exhibit problems in oral, pharyngeal, feeding, swallowing, phonatory, and respiratory coordination function. Strategies to improve oral motor, oral sensory, pharyngeal, rib cage, and respiratory musculature activity will be discussed as they relate to findings obtained during a comprehensive clinical assessment. Differences between intervention strategies appropriate for direct treatment and for carryover activities such as mealtime feeding will be delineated. Upon completion of this course the therapist will be able to:
- Clinically assess oral pharyngeal, feeding/swallowing and respiratory coordination function in infants and young children
- Detail the essential components of comprehensive intervention programming for young children with neuromuscular involvement
- Implement effective body alignment/positioning for the modification of oral, pharyngeal, and respiratory function in intervention programming
- Perform treatment strategies to improve the function of the cheeks/lips, tongue, and jaw in children with neuromuscular involvement

Description
Live Webinar for Pediatric Therapists. Complete both sessions for 14.5 Contact Hours (1.45 CEUs) October 8 and 9, 2022 9:40 am EST • 8:40 am CST • 7:40 am MST • 6:40 am PST (US) This intermediate-advanced course will focus on the cardiopulmonary implications for the premature or medically-complex infant as related to physiological stability, evolving motor control, sensory stability, and transition to oral motor skills that support feeding. It will focus on advancing the critical reasoning skills of the neonatal therapist to support the infant’s ability to obtain foundational motor and sensory skills. These skills include the ability of the infant to cough, produce audible phonation, oral motor skills, swallow skills, trunk facilitation, gestational age-appropriate positioning/handling to support the emergence of gross motor skills for postural stability. You will learn movement analysis skills (via lab time and video presentations) to assess breathing patterns, facilitation techniques to support trunk development, positioning strategies to support chest wall development, and feeding techniques to maximize postural control. We will discuss current literature as relevant to this topic and apply a systems theory approach for case study treatment planning. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to do:
- Integrate chest wall movement assessment and treatment strategies to maximize infant outcomes
- Utilize developmental positioning and handling interventions to reduce chest wall deformities
- Assess the effects of invasive and non-invasive pulmonary support to the facial and oral structures as related to non-nutritive sucking and oral feeding progression
- Incorporate postural support with positioning and handling of infants for improved chest wall mobility during oral feeding
- Integrate a systems approach to individualized care plan for the infant with cardiopulmonary compromised

Feeding and Swallowing in the NICU: Assessment, Intervention, and Transition Home
Presented by CIAO Seminars
Date
October 15, 2022 - October 16, 2022
Description
Feeding difficulties in the NICU are common and can be challenging for even experienced therapists. Premature infants and medically fragile/sick newborns are unique from typically developing healthy newborns. An appreciation of their fragile and immature sub systems, maturation of these subsystems around feeding and swallowing, as well as our ability to impact these systems, are required to be a successful clinician serving this population. This two day seminar will provide a strong foundation in evidence based information, theory and critical analysis of: sub system analysis, swallowing safety and function, appropriate and effective therapeutic interventions, family/caregiver engagement and discharge planning. Infant’s communication skills, positioning impact on feeding and swallowing, pre-feeding skills, therapeutic feeding trials, bottle and breast feeding, family involvement, and feeding in palliative care will also be discussed. Along with interactive lectures; videos, pictures, case studies, demonstrations and activities will be used to further expand learning opportunities and empower participants as feeding therapists with this fragile population in the NICU and beyond. What to Bring:
- A baby doll with soft movable extremities OR a “NDT doll”
- One receiving blanket
- One baby bottle

THE EARLY FEEDING SKILLS ASSESSMENT TOOL: A Guide to Cue-Based Feeding in the NICU
Presented by Pediatric Resources Inc.
Date
October 22, 2022 - October 23, 2022
Description
Join us for a Train-the-Trainer session on the Early Feeding Skills Assessment (EFS) Tool. Effective feeding care starts with assessment of what the infant needs to be successful. Learn to use the EFS to effectively provide an infant-guided approach to feeding. Simultaneously learn to train others back home to use the EFS to strengthen your unit’s feeding care. Review current research, the role of experience, dynamic systems theory, and feeding outcomes after NICU. Videotapes with enhanced audio of swallowing and breathing to learn key skill areas of the EFS: respiratory regulation, oral motor and swallowing function, physiologic stability, engagement, and change in coordination patterns of s-s-b as infants develop. Gain confidence scoring early feeding skills as not yet evident, emerging or established. Learn components of an infant-guided, co-regulated approach to feeding and contingent adaptations that make this approach so effective, using the EFS to plan individualized interventions. Receive resources to train others to use the EFS. As a group, network and navigate challenging issues and role-model a collaborative feeding practice. Learning Outcomes
- Discuss outcomes related to feeding in preterms
- Describe the scoring process for the EFS
- Describe application of the EFS to a cue-based feeding approach and problem-solving
- Identify infant cues of stress during feeding specific to physiology, swallowing, and feeding
- Score and profile infant feeding specific to readiness, physiologic stability, oral-motor, & swallowing using videotaped feedings
- Dynamic systems theory applied to feeding
- Preterm infant feeding skill development
- Systematic assessment using the EFS
- Scoring practice via videotaped feedings
- Application of EFS to intervention, use in your unit
- Problem-solving team issues and successes
