PEDIATRIC VIDEOFLUOROSCOPIC SWALLOW STUDIES: SWALLOW STUDIES: From Physiology to Analysis
Presented by Pediatric Resources Inc.
Date
June 26, 2022 - June 26, 2022
Description
Evolution of physiology from infancy forward. Critical information for conducting and interpreting pediatric swallow studies and problem-solving at each juncture. Learn how to look beyond aspiration and appreciate the entire swallow pathway and its potential for compensations and maladaptations in relation to co-morbidities. Procedures in preparation for and during the study that are most common across the US. Recommendations and optional treatment modalities specific to pediatrics will be highlighted. A pediatric history and report format provided to enhance learning. Videos of normal swallowing and typical radiographic swallowing problems will be shown. Case scenarios, and real-life examples discussed. Leave with a new appreciation for the essential current perspectives and the importance of problem-solving each infant/child and his unique presentation. Learn strategies to enhance MD understanding, buy-in and support from a clinician “in the trenches”. Looking at the evidence-base, the big picture for that infant/child, and use of critical reflective thinking, not a cookbook approach.
Learning Outcomes
- Describe normal radiographic swallowing behaviors in pediatrics (neonate -> 5 years)
- Delineate differences between pediatric and adult studies
- Describe optimal procedures for pediatric patients
- Describe typical problems and compensations used in pediatrics
- Discuss recommendations and highlight treatment modalities specific to the pediatric population
Seminar Content
- Pediatric vs. Adult studies
- Criteria for referral & readiness for swallow study
- Preparing the family
- Normal swallowing physiology: Birth to Adulthood
- Protocol/Positioning/Textures
- Typical problems/Modifications, Strategies

VitalStim Therapy and Beyond: DINES Specialty Certificate Program – Pediatric Focus
Presented by CIAO Seminars
Date
July 30, 2022 - July 31, 2022
Description
VitalStim Therapy and Beyond: DINES (Dynamic Integration of NMES and Exercise for Swallowing) This accredited hands-on competency course will focus on the muscle physiology, kinesiology, and pathology of the normal and abnormal swallowing mechanisms as it changes across infancy, through childhood and into adulthood. The principles of NMES will be taught in tandem with active dysphagia exercise therapy. NMES for Dysphagia protocols, using FDA cleared devices, will be covered against the backdrop of neurophysiology of the swallowing mechanism and available research. Adjustments to NMES parameters – frequency, phase duration, duty cycle, and more – will be incorporated in specific treatment protocols and extensively practiced in hands-on lab sessions. Cases will be evaluated using the impairment model (pathology; symptoms; signs; dysfunctions; and impairments) and treatment planning will be practiced. Participants will receive one-on-one attention from two experienced instructors, a dysphagia expert and an electrical stimulation expert. Instructors will deliver relevant information on FDA clearance and clinical options relevant to different equipment options available today to better equip clinicians in the ever-changing world of NMES for the treatment of pediatric and adult dysphagia. Participants who successfully complete this course will leave as a skilled VitalStim Provider and DINES Provider with the confidence and building blocks needed to implement a successful NMES for dysphagia therapy program. “I learned more about dysphagia in this course than I did in all of grad school!”

Pediatric Feeding Disorder: Consider the Factors
Presented by Pediatric Feeding Community
Date
September 8, 2022 - September 9, 2022
Description
Our purpose is to connect the variety of pediatric feeding providers and educate each other on the opportunities available to help each other provide the best possible multidisciplinary care for patients with pediatric feeding disorders.
We will focus on the four main factors of PFD. We are providing the information and skills as well as the knowledge of professionals to help providers better treat this vulnerable population of children. Our conference speakers are from a variety of different specialties (Pediatric GI, speech pathologists, pediatricians, psychologists, and a dietician, etc.) to give the audience a flavor of the multidisciplinary approach required for treatment. We will also have a few panel discussions to communicate with our audience (a pediatric physician, a psychologist and a parent panel). Our symposium will also focus on rapid diagnosis of pediatric feeding disorders which is critical in preventing further deterioration of the condition. It is critical for physicians and other providers (social workers, therapists, etc.) to be able to work together in a coordinated fashion to treat children with feeding disorders. We plan to provide our audience with a framework to help them treat patients with this multidisciplinary approach.

Presented by Education Resources, Inc.
Date
September 10, 2022 - September 11, 2022
Description
Course Description: Feeding and swallowing disorders can be challenging. This engaging course teaches participants problem solving skills to treat children and infants who have complex feeding disorders, including difficulties with airways, GI tract, nutrition, hydration, advancing feeding, tube feeding/weaning, lip/tongue tie, barriers to oral feeding, and ways to overcome picky eating habits, thus, improving functional outcomes. Learning Objectives:
- Apply knowledge of airway deficits for management decisions with infants and children who demonstrate oropharyngeal dysphagia
- Identify barriers to successful oral feeding (e.g., nutrition, GI tract, and neurologic conditions)
- Describe primary factors necessary as a foundation to advance oral feeding with infants in NICU and parents actively involved
- Demonstrate strategies for advancing oral feeding in tube feeders
- Implement intervention for picky eaters with a range of sensory and behavior-based principles
- Determine strategies to measure intervention/ treatment outcomes by time, frequency, and intensity
