Overcoming Complex Feeding Challenges and Feeding Tube-Dependency: How to Make Lasting Progress (4-part series)
Presented by Chicago Feeding Group
Date
February 2, 2021 - February 23, 2021
Description
Children with feeding tubes or complex feeding challenges struggle with eating but are also at greater risk for long term difficulties with both eating and self-regulation. Heidi and Jeni of Thrive by Spectrum Pediatrics will share the way their team helps families and children with building trust and enjoyment of food. They will explain the use of hunger and other internal motivations to eat, and the benefits of responsive feeding. They will use case studies and outcome data to demonstrate how the improved relationship with food facilitates improved oral skills, increased autonomy and independence with eating, and decreased tube-dependency or adult-directed eating. If you feel stuck in working with children who seem fearful of food or have no desire to eat, then this course is for you! The good news is that there are decades of research on what it takes to develop a healthy relationship with food and how to foster autonomy and independence that applies to all children, even those with special needs or those who have never eaten before. This event is a 4-part series, meeting on: Tuesdays February 2, 9, 16, 23 2021, 6:00-8:00 pm CST This course has been submitted for credit with the Illinois Early Intervention Program as well as the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. Those who have paid for a professional ticket and are in attendance for the full duration of all four events will receive a certificate of attendance for credit. Those who registered for a student ticket will also receive a certificate of attendance, however these will not be eligible for CEUs.

# 306 CAN-EAT Approach …Using medical, motor, & therapy strategies in pediatric feeding
Presented by Motivations
Date
February 19, 2021 - February 20, 2021
Description
Feeding and swallowing problems in infants and young children are typically complex and result from a combination of factors including issues that can make eating painful or difficult. In order to successfully remediate feeding problems, clinicians must understand how medical and nutritional issues can contribute to feeding disorders and use a comprehensive approach to intervention. The CAN-EAT Approach© is a 2-day workshop focusing on medical, nutritional, and therapeutic strategies for children with pediatric feeding disorders. In the CAN-EAT Approach© “CAN” stands for comfort and nutrition which come first. Day one will focus on strategies to build GI comfort and good growth as well as explore other medical issues that interfere with feeding progression. Day two will focus on therapeutic strategies from a variety of philosophies. “EA” represents establishing acceptance of the spoon or easy textures. Then “T” stands for therapy for skill development and feeding progression. Therapeutic strategies for common feeding problems will be explored in depth through lecture and video demonstration.

VitalStim Therapy and Beyond: DINES Specialty Certificate Program – Pediatric Focus
Presented by CIAO Seminars
Date
February 26, 2021 - February 27, 2021
Description
VitalStim Therapy and Beyond: DINES (Dynamic Integration of NMES and Exercise for Swallowing) This accredited hands-on competency course will focus on the muscle physiology, kinesiology, and pathology of the normal and abnormal swallowing mechanisms as it changes across infancy, through childhood and into adulthood. The principles of NMES will be taught in tandem with active dysphagia exercise therapy. NMES for Dysphagia protocols, using FDA cleared devices, will be covered against the backdrop of neurophysiology of the swallowing mechanism and available research. Adjustments to NMES parameters – frequency, phase duration, duty cycle, and more – will be incorporated in specific treatment protocols and extensively practiced in hands-on lab sessions. Cases will be evaluated using the impairment model (pathology; symptoms; signs; dysfunctions; and impairments) and treatment planning will be practiced. Participants will receive one-on-one attention from two experienced instructors, a dysphagia expert and an electrical stimulation expert. Instructors will deliver relevant information on FDA clearance and clinical options relevant to different equipment options available today to better equip clinicians in the ever-changing world of NMES for the treatment of pediatric and adult dysphagia. Participants who successfully complete this course will leave as a skilled VitalStim Provider and DINES Provider with the confidence and building blocks needed to implement a successful NMES for dysphagia therapy program. “I learned more about dysphagia in this course than I did in all of grad school!”

Description
In this episode Michelle is joined by Megan Richmond, DHA, M.S., CCC-SLP, CLC, a pediatric speech-language pathologist with over eighteen years of clinical and research experience, who is also trained in yoga for the special child through Kripalu. Dr. Megan’s unique background of research on best practices for Interprofessional Practice when treating Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders is a special treat for this episode. She too was frustrated by traditional “silo” approaches to therapy, so she dove into the field with a desire to learn “How do we fix this?” and long story short it became her life’s work for 4 years of intense study. The end result, one amazing journey towards a Doctorate in Health Administration, and a new zeal to share that information with colleagues around the globe! Be inspired with laughter and light when these two nerdy SLP gals take on Interprofessional Practice! By the end of this PodCourse, participants will be able to identify and describe: Objectives:
- Three potential Interprofessional Practice team members for evaluation and treatment of Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders 2.Three guiding principles of Interprofessional Practice and how to incorporate them into practice. 3. Three common barriers to Interprofessional Practice for the Early Intervention SLP and how to overcome them.
