# 306 CAN-EAT Approach …Using medical, motor, & therapy strategies in pediatric feeding
Presented by Motivations, Inc
Date
January 19, 2025 - January 20, 2025
Description
Pediatric feeding and swallowing problems that effect infants and children may be complex and often involve a combination of factors including issues that can make eating painful or difficult. In order to successfully remediate feeding problems, clinicians must understand how medical and nutritional issues can contribute to feeding disorders and use a comprehensive approach to intervention. The CAN-EAT Approach© is a 2-day workshop focusing on medical, nutritional, and therapeutic strategies for children with pediatric feeding disorders. This course will allow participants to describe how pediatric feeding disorders are defined in the literature, what the contributing factors include, and how this relates to clinical practice. Identify primary gastrointestinal issues (gastroesophageal reflux, constipation, motility disorders, eosinophilic esophagitis, and visceral hyperalgesia) during a feeding evaluation and explain how these issues affect a child’s feeding skill development and ability to progress. Participants will analyze a child’s oral motor function and apply the knowledge in treatment making recommendations for appropriate diet, utensil use, and development of a therapy plan for skill development. Identify signs and symptoms of pharyngeal dysphagia or risk for pharyngeal dysphagia in a child and make appropriate recommendations for further assessment or treatment. Analyze moderate and complex pediatric feeding cases identifying barriers to feeding progression and apply principles to prioritize treatment strategies and write appropriate goals. Describe and apply examples of therapeutic techniques to reduce gagging, improve liquid and food acceptance, improve chewing skill, and wean from a feeding tube. In the CAN-EAT Approach© “CAN” stands for comfort and nutrition which come first. Day one will focus on strategies to build GI comfort and good growth as well as explore other medical issues that interfere with feeding progression. Day two will focus on therapeutic strategies from a variety of philosophies. “EA” represents establishing acceptance of the spoon, easy textures or mealtime routine. Then “T” stands for therapy for skill development and feeding progression. Therapeutic strategies for common feeding problems will be explored in depth through lecture and video demonstration. Information is applicable to infants and children from birth to 21 (class will discuss infants but is not focused on infant feeding issues)

Torticollis is a complex diagnosis with many interrelated factors which can contribute to, cause or be associated with torticollis. By learning to think critically using a multidisciplinary lens, therapists will be better equipped to provide effective assessment and interventions. Different perspectives will be discussed and considered when implementing a multifaceted and holistic treatment approach. Attendees will be given as well the opportunity to problem solve with the presenters in the areas of developmental milestones, posture, fine/gross motor development and feeding & swallowing skills. By viewing torticollis through a multidisciplinary lens, attendees will gain effective tools to treat the multifaceted aspects of torticollis.

Breathe, Baby Breathe: Developmental Interventions for Infants with Tracheostomy Tubes
Presented by Education Resources, Inc.
Date
December 13, 2023 - December 13, 2025
Description
Advance your assessment, treatment, and outcomes for infants requiring a tracheostomy tube. Medical co-morbidities associated with infants requiring a tracheostomy tube, implications of the tracheostomy tube on oral feeding/motor development, integrating physical rehabilitation treatments and respiratory therapy interventions to maximize infant outcomes with oral feeding, motor development, and daily activities related to play skills will be discussed. Expand your practice by integrating evidence into your clinical decision-making including reading/interpreting vent settings during interventions for objective assessments of infants that are intubated or have tracheostomy tubes. Expanded lecture/lab section devoted to infants with tracheostomy tubes include oral motor, feeding interventions, postural control, manual cough facilitation, positioning/handling, integrating use of a one-way valve into treatment, weaning respiratory support, and durable medical equipment recommendations for infant/family in preparation for home discharge. This course will focus on infants up to 12 months corrected gestational age with information applicable to clinicians working in the NICU, PICU, transitional pediatric care, in-home therapy, early intervention, and outpatient clinics. Learning Objectives: 1. Differentiate medical pathology from normal development for infants requiring a tracheostomy tube. 2. Determine how the placement of a tracheostomy tube influences the development of oral feeding and postural control skills. 3. Identify three risk factors for feeding dysfunction associated with oral feeding an infant with a tracheostomy. 4. Apply at least two feeding strategies for infants requiring a tracheostomy tube to improve sensory and motor performance with oral feeding. 5. Apply at least two postural control strategies for infants with a tracheostomy tube to improve their ability to utilize vocal cord movement to enhance their cough, phonation, and gross motor movement. 6. Choose an individualized care plan for an infant using the provided case study with tracheostomy tubes for improved outcomes with oral feeding, cough facilitation, motor control, and phonation.
